Examining the Effects of Embedded Vibrotactile Feedback on the Feel of a Digital Musical Instrument

چکیده
This paper deals with the effects of integrated vibrotactile feedback on the“feel”of a digital musical instrument. Building on previous work developing a DMI with integrated vibrotactile feedback actuators, we discuss how to produce instrument-like vibrations, compare these simulated vibrations with those produced by an acoustic instrument and examine how the integration of this feedback effects performer ratings of the instrument. We found that integrated vibrotactile feedback resulted in an increase in performer engagement with the instrument, but resulted in a reduction in the perceived control of the instrument. We discuss these results and their implications for the design of new digital musical instruments.

A Systematic Approach to Musical vibrotactile feedback
This paper presents a new approach to the integration of vibrotactile feedback into digital musical instruments. A design strategy for musical vibrotactile systems is developed based on stimulator properties and neurophysiological studies of vibrotactile perception. A software vibration synthesizer driven by perceptual sound features extracted from audio feedback has been created based on these...
متن کاملVibrotactile Feedback in Digital Musical Instruments
This paper discusses vibrotactile feedback in digital musical instruments. It compares the availability of intrinsic vibrotactile feedback in traditional acoustic musical instruments with the lack of vibrotactile feedback in most digital musical instruments. A short description of human sensory ability with regard to this form of feedback is given and the usefullness of vibrotactile feedback to...
متن کاملA qualitative analysis of haptic feedback in music focused exercises
We present the findings of a pilot-study that analysed the role of haptic feedback in a musical context. To closely examine the role of haptics in Digital Musical Instrument (DMI) design an experiment was formulated to measure the users’ perception of device usability across four separate feedback stages: fully haptic (force and tactile combined), constant force only, vibrotactile only, and no ...
متن کاملAn Exploration on the Influence of Vibrotactile Cues during Digital Piano Playing
An exploratory experiment was carried out in which subjects with different musical skills were asked to play a digital piano keyboard, first by following a specific key sequence and style of execution, and then performing freely. Judgments of perceived sound quality were recorded in three different settings, including standard use of the digital piano with its own internal loudspeakers, and con...
متن کاملVibrotactile Feedback-Assisted Performance
When performing digital music it is important to be able to acquire a comparable level of sensitivity and control to what can be achieved with acoustic instruments. By examining the links between sound and touch, new compositional and performance strategies start to emerge for performers using digital instruments. These involve technological implementations utilizing the haptic information chan...
